Bicycling....for life?
by Ranolfo Ugalino Sr
(as published 4 years ago in MVP)
When you turn 40 something, you start to notice a lot of changes in every part of your body…your bones start funny noises, like in your knees, your elbows, your back and almost all the joints join in the cracking rhythm as if nobody wants to be left unnoticed…he,he,he.
At this point in life, you start taking pills to stop the pain…arthritis sets in, migraine headaches, and high blood pressure caused by stress dealing with everyday problems…and old age creeping in.
So one day, while visiting my Doctor, he advised and let me choose what I want to do with my high blood pressure…three options: pills, diet or exercise. I was still working then. I cannot diet because I needed to eat to be strong to work. I didn’t want to exercise because I didn’t have the time. So I told my Doctor to prescribe me the pill.

Winning my little battles with CA
by Grace Luczon-Foronda
(as published 3 years ago in MVP)
Everyone knows that CA is a dreadful disease. I always pity a person afflicted with CA. At an early stage its just a matter of prolonging life and easing the pain, and in its advanced stage-it is getting ready for the inevitable. It never occurred in my mind I would one day victimized by CA. One early morning of February 2008, while I was in the field gathering corn, I felt suddenly weak, trembling down to the innermost nerve of my feet. I thought all the while it maybe because I havenít taken a complete meal. I have only taken a bite of a slice of kamoteng kahoy and a cup of coffee. So I went home and soft-boiled an egg and drank a glass of water. Luckily Iíve got a capsule of revicon left in my medicine kit.
After an hour of resting under the shade, some pep returned. I didnít know that this was a symptom of a still unknown disease. I massaged my left breast to revive my normal heartbeat, when all of a sudden, I felt a hard lump on the inner lower quadrant. Itís about a size of a one-peso coin. I went to consult a doctor and advised me to undergo a mammo ultra sound. The examination confirmed the presence of a cystic structure. I have to seek a second opinion from another doctor. It is then that I first experienced an FNAB or Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy at the Metro Vigan Cooperative Hospital. It is a pre-operation biopsy wherein the surgeon, using a fine needle has to aspirate a blood and tissue sample from the lump and let it examined by a pathologist. I was then very tensed and have had sleepless nights waiting for the result which took about a month.

Running is Always Fun
by Fel Gorospe
Everybody’s undeniably crazy heating and firing it up with summer activities especially if we are talking about beaches, getaways, tanning and athletic summer sports. The heat season is indeed up-to-the-minute and so, St. Williams Institute Alumni headed by Mrs. Eva Pascua Tadique took it a notch by giving it a different kind of twist and gave us Fun Run happened last April 25, 2011 as part of SWI Grand Global Reunion. Over one hundred (100) participated and went for a long run in Magsingal, Ilocos Sur. The event was heavily supported by the VGent Foundation, Inc. and Ilocos Youth Football Association (IYFA).

SWI CPR Training
by Eva Pascua Tadique
The SWI Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Training with Sir John Garcia was part of our Grand Global Reunion activities. John studied in SWI for a year before he migrated to the US. When he was still in the US, John emailed me asking whether SWI would accept said training for 2 to 3 hours. Of course the school was so glad. It was scheduled for the Elementary and High School teachers, CAT students, student council and some selected students from all class levels.
It was a very educational, informative and exciting training since everyone was given a chance to try to save lives through the six mannequins used to see whether our CPR exercises were correct or not. I beleive this exercise is indeed a need of the times as we are experiencing lots of natural calamities as well as diseases that would attack a person's state of health and wellness anytime.
