IFA consultant garners new distinction

by Fel Gorospe

The consultant for Special Projects of Ilocos Football Association (IFA) continues to stamp her mark in the international Table Tennis arena. Ms. Rachel Ramos has this month passed the gruelling International Referee Course & Exam of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) held at the Las Vegas Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. She was among the only five successful candidates and the only one from the Philippines. The results were made known last July 19, 2013.

Ms. Ramos’ recent feat made her the first and only International (IR) in the Philippines and the first female IR in all of South East Asia. To date, only the countries of Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and now the Philippines boast of qualified IRs in the region. This newest milestone in Ms. Ramos’ almost a decade-long Table Tennis involvement added up to her still unbroken Philippine record as the only Blue-Badge International Umpire, the highest classification of table tennis umpires in the world.

Last year Ms. Ramos made history when she became the first ever Filipino Table Tennis umpire to get into the London Olympics. This was since Table Tennis’ first appearance as an Olympic sport at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. More than that, she also proved to be one of the best there as she was entrusted to umpire the Men’s Team Gold Medal Match which was the highlight event of the London Olympics Table Tennis Competition.

Way back in 2010, Ms. Ramos was instrumental in convincing Coach Bobby de Jesus, then in charge of the grassroots development of the Philippine Football Federation, to join the Vgent Foundation Inc. Together, Ms. Ramos and Coach Bobby formed the Ilocos Football Association as a sports arm of VFI. With its mere two years of existence, IFA is now a strong force in the promotion and development of Football in the entire Ilocos province with its no-nonsense plans and programs. Further, IFA has been active in sending its youth football teams to competitions both locally or internationally.
