Final Random Notes

by Fel Gorospe

Coinciding with my 75th birthday, and after 9 years and 9 volumes of random notes, I finally say goodbye to this weekly habit.  My diamond celebration of life provided a deep insight for me, that the weekly writing must escalate to another level that is more personal. And I dedicate most of my remaining times to my family and my philanthropic works in VGent Foundation, Inc.  Concurrently, my turnover of operational involvement in the VGent Group as chairman is almost complete.

As I bid goodbye to this weekly writing, I would say that this is not the last of my words to you.  When I feel like writing again, I shall. But that would perhaps on a lesser frequency. That is the beauty of retiring, the beauty of freedom.  You do what you want to do, and enjoy life more.

Thank you all so much for patronizing my thoughts and for all your wonderful feedback.  Till we write again!

Generous The 500

by Fel Gorospe

Five hundred (500) seems to be the key word for VGent Foundation, Inc (VFI) Adopt-A-Scholar Program.  Following our momentum fueled by the recent launching of the program with ten (10) scholars, VFI is currently underway of achieving a lot of 500's. What are these 500's?
  1. 500 Adopters. For the next six months, we are in search of the generous 500 individuals who will serve as adopters for deserving scholars from Ilocos Region. These generous 500 adopters will serve as an inspiration and vehicle for continuity of the program.
  2. 500 Pesos. For this amount every month, you can help send a scholar to school and help this child pursue his dreams. Its the easy, yet powerful 500.
  3. 500 Minutes. At a minimum, this is the amount of time you spend online per week, perhaps reading facebook or reading emails. At least about 500 minutes or 8.33 hours per week. You can incorporate within this time period a moment to check on your adopted scholar every week to see his progress. It is rewarding.
  4. 500 Seconds. At most, this is the amount of time you spent reading this Random Notes issue. And hopefully, this is the amount of time you feel in your hearts you got to do something, desire to be part of the generous 500.

The Good Side of Greed

by Fel Gorospe

Greed is technically defined as a negative, the excessive desire to acquire or possess more than what one needs or deserves, especially with respect to material wealth. However, there is a paradigm when greed is
good and we got to tap our inner Gordon Gekko (the main character of the 1987 hit movie, “Wallstreet”).

Our recent series of strategic planning in the VGent Group of Companies were centered on path to profitability and it establishes the proforma principle that corporations are never humanized, they are designed to increase shareholders’ wealth and make money. In other words, companies are based on greed. And therefore, industries and economies are fundamentally based on  greed.

As greedy as a company can get, however, when the supplemental motivation is to alleviate the standards of living of employees and in turn forward a good percentage to civic works such as VGent Foundation, then I would suppose there is a good side of greed.

Sadly, it is the side of greed that most companies nowadays lack and fail to live up to.
